Wingfield Pines Master Planning
ALT, with assistance from University of Michigan graduate students, is developing a Master Management Plan that will address a wide range of management and user issues influencing the site. The Master Management Plan will provide a comprehensive framework for other ALT properties as well, and the framework will be made available to other land trusts in the region. The final plan will artfully communicate an overall spatial design for the site and use various visual media to illustrate key design features. The design will be largely informed by and address five major themes.
Stormwater Management
Provides strategies for mitigating severe erosion on the site's eastern slopes and showcase best management practices for treating stormwater to improve the water quality of Chartiers Creek.
Invasive Species Management and Restoration Plan
Provide at least three strategies, differentiated by the intensiveness of the approach/budget, for controlling the spread of invasive species and establishing a process of ecosystem recovery using native plant communities that enhance wildlife habitat and biodiversity.
Educational and Interpretive Program
Develop signage and interpretive elements that educate the public about the natural and cultural history of Wingfield Pines and the process of recovery occurring or projected to occur on-site, i.e. AMD treatment, ecological restoration, local flora & fauna indentification.
Public Access
Develop detailed plans that address the nuts and bolts of public use of the site, such as circulation, trail construction, parking, amenities, and canoe launch area.
Relationship to Surrounding Natural Areas and Community
Establish Wingfield Pines as a major node along the Chartiers Creek corridor and within the Boyce-Mayview natural area and surrounding communities; incorporating local knowledge and building public support are key to this goal.
