Stewardship

Canoeing at Wingfield Pines
Site Stewards are an invaluable resource for Allegheny Land Trust and provide a critical role in our conservation work as we strive toward our goal of exemplary stewardship. They increase our capacity to manage the land resources we have and enable us to focus staff time and energy on raising the funds to acquire and protect more natural area. Jan & Alan Fleckenstein are the site stewards at Wingfield Pines. Periodically, ALT will have site stewards write observations that will be accessible here.
Wingfield Pines is a highly visible, accessible, popular and dynamic community green space that is located adjacent to the 400-acre Boyce Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair, where a world class Regional Environmental Education Center (REEC) is being developed. Numerous outdoor recreation activities are open to the public at Wingfield Pines, including hiking, dog walking, bird watching, ice-skating, cross-country skiing, or simply enjoying the scenic beauty with family and friends. Parking is found along the upper entrance of Wingfield Pines near the Allegheny Land Trust sign and along Mayview Road.

More than 3,000 linear feet of Chartiers Creek runs through the site. Chartiers Creek is becoming a popular canoeing stream and Wingfield Pines provides a convenient takeout point.
Wingfield Pines provides a buffer to the Mayview Valley Biological Diversity Area (BDA) located upstream. The entire site can accommodate field trips to learn about our industrial heritage and the technology we are using today to heal one of the scars - AMD, the natural functions of a floodplain and wetlands, and how important it is to protect these resources.
