Benefits

Stream through Irwin Run Conservation Area.
Irwin Run flowing through the property traps
sediment and silt before it reaches North
Park Lake.

Conservation of this property provides these benefits:

  • Protect Water Quality: Approximately 1/2 mile of stream flows through the property that is surrounded by dense woodlands, wetlands and floodplain providing natural stormwater management and water filtration.  These natural features also trap sediment and silt from upstream development and disturbance before it reaches North Park Lake.

  • Maintain Biodiversity: North Park Lake is a Biological Diversity Area (BDA) as defined by the Allegheny County Natural Heritage Inventory.  Protecting the Irwin Run Conservation Area tract will help to buffer this BDA.

  • Preserve Greenways/Scenic Landscapes: The Northern Tier of Allegheny County is anticipated to experience an increase of an additional 55,000 residential units over the next ten years increasing the pressure on North Park.  Protection of the Ludwig tract will help to mitigate sprawl and development pressures.
