Stewardship
Site Stewards are an invaluable resource for Allegheny Land Trust and provide a critical role in our conservation work as we strive toward our goal of exemplary stewardship. They increase our capacity to manage the land resources we have and enable us to focus staff time and energy on raising the funds to acquire and protect more natural area. To guide its policies for managing and caring for its wildlife preserves in the long-term, ALT adopted a vision statement.
The Allegheny Land Trust envisions:
- an essentially wild place
- the recovery of the Wildlife Preserve to ecological conditions resembling those believed to have existed prior to European settlement
- the conservation of lands adjoining the Wildlife Preserve that contain a rich biodiversity or that support the biological health of the Preserve
- recreational and educational opportunities for the public consistent with the above statements
In reality, the vision is not likely attainable: We can not bring back extinct species. We can not expect to eliminate every non-native species. Nevertheless the vision brings strong focus to what we seek to achieve at the preserves and guides our management choices
