Highlights of Hall’s Field

View of Hall's Field.

Hall’s Field had been in disuse for more than 10 years prior to its purchase by ALT.  While the land has never been developed in any way, it does have some history relevant to the community of Sewickley.

Hall’s Field was once part of Blackburn Farm, which still exists today in the areas surrounding our property.  From the 1800’s until the 1960’s, Hall’s Field was used for various crops, including corn, wheat and oats.

After 1960, the land was turned into a pasture for horses to graze, but was no longer associated with the farm.  There is still a horse trail that runs through the property and—once it links up with Blackburn Road—still leads to Blackburn Farm.

Today, that same trail is used during the Sewickley Hunt.  Formed in the 1920’s, the event uses miles of trails for a “drag hunt,” in which participants team with horse and hound to track the elusive scent of a fox.  The annual occasion attracts about 50 participants per hunt—which is run twice a week during the fall.  The acquisition of Hall’s Field will help ensure that a Sewickley tradition lives on for future generations.
