An Additional 14 Acres Added to Emerald View Park

Thank you for your generous support!
Protecting an Urban Forest Right in Your Back Yard
ALT is pleased to announce that in partnership with the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation (MWCDC), we have reached the fundraising goal and have protected 14 additional acres on Mt. Washington to expand Emerald View Park. With over $212,000 in contributions, ALT has secured all of the necessary funding and is preparing to close in February. More than 115 individuals contributed gifts to the campaign. Major funding for the project was also provided by The PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, The Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Laurel Foundation and The Heinz Endowments. A small grant was also provided by the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds to close the final funding gap.
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to protecting this land for permanent green space that your children’s children will be able to enjoy and say that their grandparents helped to protect. – Roy Kraynyk, ALT Executive Director

In the coming weeks, the property will be transferred to the City to be added officially to Emerald View Park. With the protection of this property, Emerald View Park will expand to encompass 257 acres in Mt. Washington. A 19-mile trail system is planned for the Park and the properties protected by Allegheny Land Trust are critical to connecting the south side of Mt. Washington to existing park trails. In 2011, ALT and the MWCDC will continue to work together to protect adjacent properties to complete the vision for Emerald View Park.
Every time I bring someone new to the Park, there’s an “aha” moment—when the vision and reality of the Park just fall into place. You can see it in their face, the way they walk, hear it in their voice. All of a sudden, they get how these acres of wilderness and designed space come together to create an urban wilderness experience that can’t be rivaled anywhere! – Ilyssa Manspeizer, the MWCDC’s Director of Park Development and Conservation.
In April of 2007, Mayor Ravenstahl officially designated Emerald View Park as Pittsburgh's fifth regional park, and the only one in the City's southern neighborhoods.
Building strong partnerships with stakeholders like the Mt. Washington CDC and Allegheny Land Trust is helping to further our City’s environmental transformation. Protecting this land as permanent green space will improve the tremendous recreational opportunities available at one of our City’s most unique and beautiful regional parks. – Mayor Luke Ravenstahl
