About Hunting on Allegheny Land Trust Properties
Allegheny Land Trust is a conservation organization that embraces the protection of natural lands as natural habitat for native plants and animals. Whitetail deer are animals native to Pennsylvania. Hunting is just one of the recreational activities that can be enjoyed on select Allegheny land Trust properties. Hiking, fishing, bird watching and educational study by school students or environmental groups may be conducted at the same time so please be safe and considerate.
Deer populations have far exceeded carrying capacity, which is the level at which a habitat can no longer support an organism or its populations with food, water, shelter, etc., and still remain a healthy, intact forest system. There are several reasons for the overpopulation and included in those is a lack of natural predators. Game biologists and conservationists have provided a significant amount of scientific data and evidence that supports the notion that deer are decimating acres of wildflowers, shrubs and young trees (future forest canopy) in PA forests.
To date, ALT is not aware of evidence that suggests that other “game” animals are having the same impact as whitetail deer on native plants and animals. We believe that until some of the other game species have a population explosion that exceed carrying capacity, ALT will limit hunting to deer on ALT lands. Deer hunting is viewed by ALT simply as one of our natural resource management tools. Other game animals will be protected as part of the natural diversity of the lands that we protect.
Hunting is allowed on select Allegheny Land Trust properties, some of which are enrolled in the PA Game Commission Safety Zone Program and others are managed by Whitetail Management Associates. The following are hunting guidelines for select ALT properties in which you can hunt. If a property is not listed below, you currently cannot hunt on that property. Hunters are responsible for knowing the property boundaries and obeying all federal, state, and local laws. (Click on a property name for more information about that property.) We ask that you respect the land, the animals and other property users when you hunt on ALT lands. If you are interested in volunteering or participating in special events, contact for more information or consider a donation to ALT Stewardship so that we may better manage our natural lands.
